Reflection for planning

So far, I have planned my website using Popplet. Popplet helped my to design a clear template of what I wanted my website to feature. I have kept it basic as I don't want to over crowd my site with too much information. From researching other movies of the same genre, I have discovered that they either keep it simple and don't reveal too much or reveal certain plot lines. I want to avoid doing that when making my movie's promotional materials. To achieve my desired website I will used a short synopsis, simple pictures and text that leaves people wanting to know what happens and not feeling like they have heard it all before when watching it. I want to keep my trailer short, this is because the amount of footage we have wouldn't work if the trailer was long, this is because too much would be given away from showing parts of the movie meant for suspense. The main website I studied, the promotional site for Sinister, showed me that keeping my layout simple and not too bold works best/ The site for Sinister has a more interactive feel about it, using a rhetorical question - linked to the movie, as the URL.

Sinister

1.    http://www.haveyouseenhim.com

2.    Promotional Images:

3.     Sinister is a supernatural thriller/horror about a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror.

4.    The promotion for the movie ‘Sinister’ achieves what it sets out to achieve, creating a sense of curiosity in the beginning of the trailer before continuing to reveal a dark and 'sinister' undertone to the film. The promotion works well, even down to the movies website URL, asking the rhetorical question that plays a part in the movie and involving the possible audience, encouraging them to want to know answers- therefore paying to see the movie. The trailer may possibly reveal a little too much of the film however it is not overly obvious. The colors used throughout are dark and haunting, setting the overall mood of the production, which is of course a mood of terror/horror. The promoters have worked hard with the website, keeping the artwork and the website simple, yet effective, using creepy fonts and graphic stills from the movie to encourage an air of mystery and terror while researching the film.

5. The film is rated MA15+, so the target audience is clearly for 15 years and upwards, because of this the promotion for the film is haunting and scary to appeal towards the older generation. The website is a basic layout, with 4 options to click on to explore further into the site. The colours and images chosen give away some things but not the entire plot, offering ‘sneak-peaks’ of what may e to come when they watch the movie.

6. The promotional material used for Sinister is effective. This is because instead of straying from the themes of the movie, the website designer has used appropriate graphics that showcase the nature of the movie. For example the website home page has still shots from the movie that relate to the text written over the top of it. The font used on the site is ‘sinister’ and looks like child’s scrawl, giving a more haunting feeling to the layout than using an average font. The way the website has been designed relates back to the trailer, subtly hinting things to come in the movie from something as simple as the décor used on the site. The trailer used offers clips that carefully demonstrate examples of the genre in the movie, making sure to show but not reveal too much. The website URL (www.haveyouseenhim.com) is quite interactive, with the plot of the film being centered around a spiritual demon, who once seen, unleashes hell on the people who disturb him. The URL works because it makes the person feel as though they are part of the drama, using a rhetorical device to entice people into wanting to know more.

7.The colour scheme used throughout the poster is grey and dismal. This is purposely done to create the effect desired. In this case, the desired effect is that the poster scares people, yet intrigues them to know more. It does this by using a grey scale backdrop, which then puts a focus on the coloured image at the front of the poster, of a girl wiping blood across the wall. Hidden in the blood is a face, which is a key symbol in the movie. By using the image of the face, the poster foreshadows what will happen in the movie, hinting the picture is a key to something yet to happen. The artwork used for promotion for Sinister uses a simple ‘less is more’ design. The image is teamed with the blurred font and a haunting tag line, creating a sense of curiosity about the movie and therefore successfully achieving what was wanted and attracting an audience for the movie.
